Metz brings a French sustainable touch to Washington

By Béatrice Alcaraz on 31 March 2015

Early March, the French Embassy in Washington, DC, invited representatives of French cities and companies in order to prepare the Climate Summit which will be held in Paris next December. During this "Forum of communities for urban sustainability", Mr Dominique Gros, Mayor of Metz (France), presented shining actions his city is implementing in the field of energy management and public transport.

Metz (120,000 inhabitants) signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2009 and has led an exemplary policy in the field of energy, transport and environment for over a decade now. These actions contribute to a successful energy transition.

"The future of the world depends on energy saving and local energy management"
Dominique Gros

In 2013, Metz developped the first district system heating to use such a high part of renewables in France. Indeed, the unit is powered by over 60% of renewable energy allowing to heat the equivalent of 40,000 housings.

The city has recently adopted a new kind of transport called Mettis.
This "Bus Rapid Transit" runs 20 kilometers on two lanes and can transport up to 2,400 personnes per hour. In 2014, Mettis has transported more than 17 million users.

Metz’ objectives:

  • Reducing its energy consumption by 23%
  • Bringing to 50% the share of renewables in the global energy mix
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2020
