Goods travel by tram in Saint-Etienne (France)

By Béatrice Alcaraz on 11 October 2017

In Saint-Etienne, the Metropolitan Council, the public transport operator STAS and Efficacity have joined forces to set up a good delivery scheme never tried out in France before.

Launched last June, the first round of tests involves two Casino supermarkets in the city centre. Goods are delivered off-peak so as not to disturb tramway users and to respect the shops’ delivery routine.

The TramFret system

TramFret carries goods from one point to another in a recycled tram that runs on the existing network between the normal passenger trams. The project tackles the issues of vehicle recycling, goods containers, infrastructure optimisation, information, communication and urban integration with the requirement of optimising delivery of the goods and ensuring the system’s energy efficiency.

Results

Roll containers are unloaded in only two minutes and over 15 tonnes of goods have been delivered during the test phase.
Inspired by a project suggested at COP21, the idea is popular in Saint-Etienne and could be replicated in many in other urban areas.
