Climate science for urban policymakers: new report released at COP24

By Sara Giovannini on 15 January 2019

The Global Covenant of Mayors has recently released the Summary for Urban Policymakers (SUP), a city-driven report authored by IPCC scientists, city practitioners and NGOs. The report summarises what the IPCC findings in their latest 1,5 degrees warming assessment report mean for cities worldwide.

“Climate science should accessible to urban policymakers, because without them, there will be no limiting global warming to 1.5°C”. That’s the main idea behind the SUP Report, which was released on December 10th 2018 at the latest COP24 in the Polish city of Katowice.

The report delivers 3 main messages

Science is clear: We have to act now

It is clear that urban areas will have a fundamental role in order to make sure we stay within the 1.5°C limit. At the current rate of warming of 0.2°C per decade, global warming will reach 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052. The consequences of this action would be serious, across all natural and man-made sectors.

Cities can get this right

Cities can and need to act now! Actions should be taken, in all areas, in order to reduce CO2 emissions and address the causes and effects of climate change. Thanks to their structure, cities can act quicker than national governments and test innovative solution that could be easily replicated.

Multilevel collaboration is key

We need collaboration across all level and sectors, and we need it fast. This means not only between local, regional and national levels but also by building stronger links between rural and urban areas and by fostering changes in people’s behaviours.
