#COP23: the Covenant of Mayors is making its mark at the Climate Summit

By Miriam Eisermann on 9 November 2017

Join Energy Cities and signatories of the Covenant of Mayors at the COP23 which started on Monday 6th November. The City of Bonn, in Germany is hosting this climate conference which, under the presidency of Fiji, has gathered over 20,000 participants representing states, industry, community organisations and many more. Mayors and local authority representatives will also be there to stress their essential role in mitigating climate change and adapting their local areas to its effects.

THE HIGHLIGHTS TO NOTE IN YOUR #COP23 DIARY:

12 November

Summit of local and regional leaders | Room 8 & Room 6, in the Bonn Zone (Rheinaue)
At this Summit of local and regional leaders, cities and regions will speak about their on-going commitment to limiting global warming. They will present initiatives aimed at reducing energy use and energy dependency in their local area by promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy, as well as their efforts to make urban areas less dependent on private and polluting vehicles. They will especially be keen to demonstrate their ability to engage citizens and other local players in this energy transition.

The Covenant of Mayors brings together over 7,600 cities which have voluntary committed to implementing the EU energy and climate objectives. This initiative will feature prominently at the Climate Conference and several members of its policy board will tout its merits on 12th November.

13 November

A whole day will be dedicated to the success of this initiative, from its launch in 2008 to its extension to climate change adaptation and its recent expansion to other regions of the world.
With the participation of members of the EU Covenant Board: Daniel Termont, Mayor of Ghent, Eckart Würzner, Mayor of Heidelberg, Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris (tbc) and Mercè Conesa y Pagès, President of the Province of Barcelona.

16 November

Energy Day | EU Pavilion
Promoting innovation in cities is the subject of another important event for the Covenant of Mayors which will be held on Energy Day. This Day will be inaugurated on 16th November by the European Commissioner for climate and energy, Miguel Arias Cañete.

Eckart Würzner, Mayor of Heidelberg and President of Energy Cities, on behalf of the Covenant of Mayors, will sign a memorandum of understanding with the pioneers of the World Alliance for Efficient Solutions. This association, launched by the adventurer Bertrand Piccard following his round-the-world trip in a solar-powered plane, has an eclectic mix of innovators among its members. The first General Meeting of the Alliance will be convened on 14th November during the COP23 in Bonn. Claire Roumet, Executive Director of Energy Cities, will speak at this event.

This new partnership between the Covenant of Mayors and the Alliance will help match local authorities’ expectations and needs with the sustainable and innovating solutions that are being developed, thereby accelerating the energy and ecological transition of our cities.
