When the EIB is learning from cities: more EU money for local energy?
By David Donnerer | 611 visits
On Monday, the Luxembourg-based European Investment Bank (EIB) admitted for the first time city delegates to its annual meeting with civil society. All ears, the EIB Board of Directors was listening to and debating with the locally experienced such as Energy Cities' president and Lord Mayor of Heidelberg, Eckart Würzner. The bank is one of the world's largest lenders and only allowed to back projects that are in line with EU policy. So, in view of the EU’s ambitions to comply with the Paris Agreement, how can this supranational public bank better support cities in their energy transition?

Believe it or not, there is a bright future for our homes!
By Kinga Kovacs | 808 visits
Wow, what a great morning! The sun has risen and Mr Vinters* steps out of his warm bed. Mr Vinters slowly slips in his slippers and walks towards the huge crystal clear window and looks across the backyard. He sees his neighbour’s house where finally the refurbishment works are finished and he suddenly remembers how terrible the conditions were in his apartment 28 years ago. Now, Mr Vinters can enjoy his warm apartment, healthy conditions with the fresh air mixed with the smell of the morning coffee. Mr Vinters sees his neighbour across the backyard and waves him a hand. On his way to the market he listens on his phone to the morning news where the journalist mentions that the living standards in Latvia have finally reached the highest level across Europe. And Mr Vinters thinks: what a great country to live in!

Renewable energy directive vote: No binding targets, but a strong framework for citizen energy
By Alix Bolle | 723 visits
Recently, the Industry, Transport and Energy committee of the European Parliament voted a draft report on the proposed directive for the promotion of renewable energy. Although strong cases had been made for the support of nationally-binding targets, the final vote only endorsed an EU level target, of 35% (instead of 27% as originally proposed by the Commission). On a brighter side, the proposals for community energy were well reinforced in the report.

COP23: Cities keen on shoulder-to-shoulder climate action
By Miriam Eisermann | 1135 visits
Where has EU leadership in energy and climate issues gone? Mrs Merkel has been having a hard time defending her "climate chancellor" label, while we are still wondering about Mr Macron as he wishes to verify Europe's political will at his new summit on climate mobilisation on December 12th. The big emittors - amongst which is the European Union - know about their GHG balance, but they still critically lack ambitious policies for reaching the 2-degree limit agreed in Paris.
